The Herald Sun masthead is reporting an unidentified group of anti-Israel activists have begun a recruiting blitz across Melbourne.
The group in media reporting has been described as a terror cell, and has been responsible for the continued criminal damage attacks against Victorian businesses and corporations they allege are tied to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, such as if the company ships logistical support overseas to them. A highlighted example from the reporting is Toll Holdings.
In some of these videos, the group have called for QUOTE Death to Australia END QUOTE whilst citing Australia as belonging to the Aboriginal population
COMMENT It is a frequent slogan for Australian pro-Palestinian groups to link the colonisation of Australia with the war in Gaza END COMMENT.
In an interview with a Sydney-based law firm, the group has likened themselves to the UK’s Palestinian Action Group - now a designated terrorist organisation - and spouted anti-colonialist and anti-imperialism rhetoric, warning of their future intent to continue these attacks, and stating QUOTE We are not interested in so-called protest that is approved by the coloniser state…people should join and support us END QUOTE.
COMMENT In Victoria, Issue-Motivated Groups (IMGs) must obtain permits that inform intent to conduct peaceful protest prior to it commencing END COMMENT.
COMMENT They also quote a historical violent far-left terrorist organisation called the Red Army Faction, who originated in East Germany, and were responsible for multiple murders, bombings and violence against West German interests for nearly two decades from the 1970s to 1990s - “Legal, illegal, don’t give a damn” END COMMENT.
Assessment - So What?
It is the quotes about not interested in the approval process required and the subscription to a listed terrorist organisation that reflects a deeper insight into the intent of this group. We are seeing a continuing deterioration from marches and demonstrations into sabotage, criminal damage and potentially violence.
The idolisation and adoption of mantras from terrorist organisations is a significant indicator of a shift within the intent of the group.
It is possible that an even more hardcore faction of this group could form intent to engage in a mass casualty event to what they consider a ‘legitimate’ target in their actions against Israel - particularly if they are emboldened by “wins” such as the PM Albanese’s recent statements of Australia’s position on a two-state solution for the war in Gaza.
However, it is difficult to assess the group’s capacity to build a capability to reach that escalation with such limited reporting.
