The top brass of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) & Australian Federal Police called a joint snap press conference on Friday 12 July 2024 to announce the arrests of a Brisbane-based couple for espionage offences.

The couple, identified as Kira and Igor Korolev, were Russian-born Australian citizens, with Mrs Korolev an active-duty member of the Australian Army. She was employed as an Information Systems Technician within the Royal Australian Signals (RASigs) corp. ASIO & AFP allege she had taken undeclared trips back to Russia when on leave from the ADF and instructed her husband (who remained in Australia) on how to access her work account remotely, from which she would then pass state secrets.
